I'm kinda OCD when it comes to hearing/getting new music releases before they come out. Don't know why. I just like being on top of the popular music scene I guess.
So, I'm bored. And it was a long day working soccer. And the headphones are thumpin, the fire is blazing, and I have nothing better to be doing.
How about a run down on music?
So far, 2009 has been slow. But here's what I've heard and am liking as of January 10:
Animal Collective - Merriweather Post Pavillion
I'm not huge on these guys. I've always thought that there's something way too absurd about music that clangs on and on for 5 minutes about nothing. And with the fact that "Strawberry Jam" has the most unappealing album art I've ever seen, I don't know why I even bothered picking up the new one besides the fact that it was one of the first big leaks I've seen all year and Paste magazine was raving about it online. I kinda see why. It's hard to put my finger on because I'm still going back and forth about it, but I'm digging it. Mention again to the album art. This time around, they've gone with a trippy optical illusion. Sooo cool. (Probably adds to me liking the album the way the strawberry crap caused me to dislike the last)
Bon Iver - Blood Bank
It's a small, 4 song EP. But I'm a huge fan of "For Emma, Forever Ago" so this was the most exciting thing for me to see all day. Unfortunately, it's just eh. With just one listen through, there wasn't anything as particularly compelling about it that stood out to me like "skinny love" did. I'll give it another shot. But maybe there's a reason, Bon Iver didn't include these songs on his full length.
Franz Ferdinand: Tonight
It all still sounds the same. Not my cup of UK tea. Again, I just like the album art. And the art of every other album they've done. But this'll probably be deleted from my stuff in a week. Sorry Franz.
Next up on my list is Andrew Bird. I'll be giving "Noble Beast" a go through as I'm on the train tomorrow to NYC. Second to last Spring Awakening with mom. (I won't mention that it's my 7th time..the matter is irrelevant)
A life? Yep. Don't have one.
